Ship designs rely on air coolers or intercoolers to cool the air required by the ships engine during combustion. The cooler this air is, the more efficient the engine’s fuel combustion. Air coolers are subject to two kinds of contamination. On the one hand, exhaust fumes passing through the cooler deposit particulates and grime on the cooler’s air fins. On the other hand, scale builds up on the surface of the tubes that serve as conduits for the cooling water.
